irexec doesn't work

Making progress in getting irserver to work...

However, I have hit another snag... when I run irexec I get the following messages
irexec: could not connect to socket
irexec: No such file or directory

if I run irw I get...
connect: No such file or directory

but it runs if I use
irw /dev/lircd

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with a 64bit kernel 3.2.0-34-generic

No idea, maybe a there is a symlink missing. Depending on the distribution the connection pipe are expected in different locactions.
